The Wampus Cat

The University of Chicago Graduate School of Business was transformed into the Booth School of Business, with the new sign putter-uppers walking along right behind the old sign taker-downers late one evening. The next day, Ida Noyes still had no swimming pool, legions of web workers scrambled to change everything on the GSB website from “Graduate” to “Booth”, and I had a brand new Extra-Large sweatshirt that said “Chicago Booth.” (Most people who stocked up on GSB paraphernalia know that it is a sunk cost.)

When walking down Woodlawn Avenue between 58th and 59th Streets, past Raphael Viñoly’s stunning BSB building towards the Pub, we were greeted with a hilarious parking and traffic attendant booth that on the side read “Chicago Booth.” Jokes flowed freely on the way home in the other direction about how the GSB had reoriented itself towards the working class by choosing to honor the fellow who stops traffic to let me cross the street to get to the bar, and so on and so forth. Unfortunately, someone at our “Business Force” sought to clarify that it was not a “Humorous and Not-Too-Serious Business Force” by taking the “Chicago Booth” off of the side of the Booth booth in the last few days.

This is a sad day for people who are in favor of funny things being publicly available on the streets of Hyde Park.
